Shower curtains are one of the main features you notice when you walk into a bathroom especially as the room is normally quite small and they cover a large surface area. So it's important to make them look great.

Unfortunately, there are a limited number of ready made shower curtain options that you can buy so you can't always find something suitable. However, if you make your own shower curtains you can really get something unique which suits your bathroom, your style and your personality.

Making your own shower curtains is not such a huge undertaking when you consider that you really only need to be able to measure, cut and sew straight lines. Even a beginner should manage to sew a shower curtain.

Here are the steps required to design your own shower curtain:-

1. Select Your Fabric

Fabric needs to be washable (so you can freshen it up regularly) but it doesn't have to be waterproof. (You can buy a shower curtain liner and use that inside the bathtub while your designer curtain hangs outside). Find a fabric you really love that will make your bathroom look great - something colorful, something funky, something cheerful, something elegant, something vintage, something classic - whatever suits the style of your bathroom and the mood you want to create.

2. Choose a Heading

You can use more or less the same headings that are available for any curtains such as pleats or ruffles for a classic look or simple eyelets for a more modern, funky or fun style.

3. Consider How to Embellish Your Curtain

As the curtain is such a large expanse you can think about adding accents such as a contrasting border top and bottom or (washable) trimmings. You could sew on colored buttons, sequins, or decorate with embroidery. Borders or trimmings are a great way of picking out a color from a patterned fabric you may want to use in towels or other bathroom accessories.

4. Choose Curtain Rings and Rods

Curtains rings come in various styles. Metal rings are generally best for a classic or country look while funky, fun colored plastic rings may be better for a kids' bathroom. Just look at all the styles available to you in the stores and online and choose the best for your overall look. If you already have a rod fitted, think about whether you need to change it. Buy one which matches your rings.
