I would suggest going down to your public library and getting a book for simple, begining quilting. There are so many different types of quilting, and a couple of books will help you find a technique that suits you. There are many simple patterns that are no more than sewing plain squares together. I hope you enjoy your exploration. You can also search for many Yahoo groups related to quilting, and many are great for beginners. Good luck!

One of my favorite quilting books is “101 Fabulous Rotary Cut Quilts”. You can find it at Joann’s. (If you sign up for their flyer by mail, it usually has a 40% off coupon in it!) Sometimes their quilt books are 50% off. It is very comprehensive and has literally 101 different quilts in it. It also has some great tips for quilting.

I would also recommend that you get a rotary cutter and mat, and at least one quilt ruler. If you only get one for now, I would recommend the 12×6. It will do most anything you need it too.

If you don’t want to get the book right now, I would recommend making a rail fence quilt. It is fast, easy and teaches you so many “tricks” that you will be well on your way to quilting. You can find a lot of free rail fence patterns on the web.

Happy quilting and welcome to the dark side;-)

My suggestion would be to purchase the Quilt in a Day Log Cabin Quilt book. Eleanor Burns has simplied the art of quilting and her books are wonderful. The book lists as well as illustrates all items needed to quilt, explains how to choose fabric, has a fabric chart for 6 different sizes quilts, has step by step color illustrations on how to put the quilt together, sample layouts for log cabin quilts, tips on borders, pinning and quilting your quilt. It is a one step quilt lesson book. The techniques learned in this book can be carried over to other less detailed patterns. Good luck with your quilting adventure. Be aware that Quilting can easily become an addiction.

Good luck – I learned bits from books. One very good book I had out of the library years ago was ‘It’s OK if you sit on my quilt’ – it had wonderful basic instructions. I don’t know if it’s still in print. I also joined a local quilting group and learned loads from other quilters, and also on-line groups. Also I subscribe to The Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine (monthly).
