Question by The Cat: Just got a PUPPY!: How does one hang a quilt on the wall without damaging the quilt?
I see people hang quilts or rugs or tapestries on the wall. I got a great quilt for Christmas and can't wait to put it on the wall, but I don't know how.

2010 Aug 30 2The pinch gadget works. Or, you could get a rod on wooden supports and fold the quilt over it like a huge towel bar.

2010 Aug 30 4Look at the back of the quilt, at the top. There should be a sleeve. 4 inches or wider that runs almost across the entire width of quilt. You use a wooden dowel or a curtain rod through the sleeve. On the wall you can use these great 3M hooks, make sure the rod fits into the u shape of the hook.
No sleeve on back the hand tack one down. Cut a 10in width of fabric
Length should be the measurement of your quilt edge to edge minus 3 inches. Quilt width 45inches make the sleeve 42 in.
Hem short sides. Then fold fabric lengthwise and sew into a tube. Turn and whip stitch to the back of the quilt.
This is the safest and cheapest way to hang a quilt.

2010 Aug 30 5Put up a lovely curtain pole, choose one with nice finnials that complements the room and quilt. You can then either drape the quilt over it or get hanging hoops that have pinch clips (like those on shower curtains). If the quilt is extra heavy then you can sew onto standard hoops for extra support.
I have a handmade silk rug on the wall on an iron support a blacksmith made it looks fab.

2010 Aug 30 6Check with your local fabric store. There are special hook type things that sew on the back of the quilt. They are sometimes about two inches long so that you won’t have to be so exact with the brackets or nail in the wall. Sew several of these at interval across the back of the quilt. The only problem with these is that they do work best with a heavy fabric such as tapestry.
Sometimes you can also stitch a pocket out of an extra fabric on the back and hang it like you would a rod pocket drape or have cord on each end of the pole and hang from a single nail.
You can also sew an extra piece of fabric to the top to form what is called a lip. You then pull the lip over a small board until just the quilt shows and then staple the lip to the board.. Attach the board to the wall with screws or small L brackets. This method usually works the best as you can stretch the quilt tight and avoid it sagging anywhere.
Remove staples when needed and the only damage should be on the lip itself.
Any way that you choose, just remember that the quilt will need cleaned occasionally and consider how you will be able to remove it from the wall at that time.
Good Luck

2010 Aug 30 7…couple of ideas to hang a quilt
1. sew on fabric loops
2. add wooden hoops with the faric loops
(these will hang on a rod, like a curtain)
3.build a wooden frame, stretch the quilt over the frame and place another layer of wood over the outside edge
(this provides a wooden border, framing the nice quilt, and adds an additional textural appearance) the wood can be finished any way you choose…imho i prefer the “roughened appearance” with a semi-gloss varnish over a stain that compliments the room colors
